How come i have a 3 mb/s download speed connection but when i download a file it only downloads at 320 kb/s?

i recently upgraded my internet speed from 756 KB/s to 3 MB/s. now i have experienced a much faster internet connection: web pages load faster and i can watch youtube videos in 720p without a problem, but what i don't get is that when i download a file, the speed is only about 300 KB/s, not the advertised 3 MB/s. also if i go to a site such as speedtest.net, it tell me that my internet is working at 3 MB/s. why is this?How come i have a 3 mb/s download speed connection but when i download a file it only downloads at 320 kb/s?

Usually, connection speeds are expressed in kilobits (e.g 756 Kilobits per second) and megabits per second (e.g. 3 megabits per second). 8 megabits/s is equivalent to 1 Megabyte per second.





On the other hand, downloads are usually expressed in Kb/s (Kilobytes per second).





So a 3 Mbps connection means that the theoretical maximum speed is 3/8 or .375 Mb/s or roughly 384Kb/s max download speeds (theoretical).





So your download speeds are fine.





Speeds are affected by many factors including the use of wireless (and the possible interference or signal degradation inherent to it), traffic at specifics times of day (especially during peak hours at night), failing routers or DNS servers, a slower connection on the other side, and the distance between your location and the location you are trying to connect to (Connecting from DC to New Jersey is not the same than connecting from DC to London).
