I have an ADSL broadband internet connection. I also have a 8 port switch. I wanted to share the internet connection between two of my computers. I tried connecting two computers using the switch. And then connecting the ADSL connection to one of the ports of switch. However Internet connection is not shared between those two desktops. How to solve this? How to share a broadband internet connection between two computers using a hardware switch?
You will need a router to accomplish this in the easiest, most plug and play -ish way.
All the major manufacturers include EASY setup instructions, so basically you are tasked with finding the best deal. Wireless routers with four wired ports are the most common configuration so your best deal will likely be one of those.
Try here for a nice router at a great price on a DLink brand router: http://www.edealinfo.com/cgi-bin/dl?2007鈥?/a>How to share a broadband internet connection between two computers using a hardware switch?
whille sharing two PCs or internet connections, one PC must be the server and the other one a client.
this is the fact u would be known about very well.
so, the server needs to have a proxy software installed in it.then the server will be called as proxy server.
a proxy server is typically meant for sharing the internet connection.
normal connections can let u share the local resources of the server only, whille internet is the thing which lets the server interact with the outer world, other than its home network.
a popular proxy server is winproxy(which i have worked on).
after installing it, ur server wil be the proxy server, and then u'll have to specify a particular port, from where the connection wil be shared. its not physical,so dnt worry.
on the client machine,u'll have to tell it that it needs to access a proxy server for internet connectiuon. there give the IP address of the server and the number of the port from where the internet connection is shared by the proxy server.
do this, and ask again if u have probs.
bubyee!!
You could spend $20-25 on a broadband router (does not have to have wireless), follow the setup directions that come with it and connect both computers through your switch to the router. A lot of routers even come with a built in four port switch.
Or you could spend almost that much to add a second network card to the computer that is currently using the broadband connection and set up internet sharing. This function is built in to Windows 98 and up. Just make sure you share the connection on the correct network card.
I would go with the router myself.
A switch will not work in your situation. You have to have a router. The router directs traffic from your computers to the internet and then knows which computer to send the responses to. Replace the switch with a router and follow the setup directions..very easy.
